Man and Dog Rescue Driver From Sinking Car in Creek

Lloyd Lewis was near the Pudding Creek Bridge in Fort Bragg, California, when he witnessed a car crash into the water on August 22. Without waiting for emergency services, he and his dog plunged into the creek to help.

The vehicle had traveled 230 feet from the roadway and was rapidly sinking 50 feet from shore. Lewis reached the car and helped pull both the injured driver and the driver's dog from the submerging vehicle.

By the time Fort Bragg Police officers arrived at 7:34 AM, Lewis had already gotten both passengers out of the car. Officers helped Lewis and the two dogs reach safety first, then turned their attention to the driver who was standing on the roof of his sinking vehicle.

The driver couldn't swim because of his injuries, making the rescue even more critical. The Fort Bragg Fire Department launched a full water rescue operation, with Officer Beak assisting in bringing the driver to shore.

Emergency medical staff transported the driver to Adventist Health Mendocino Coast Emergency Department for treatment. An officer took the driver's dog to the Mendocino Coast Humane Society, where veterinary staff checked the animal over.

The rescue brought together an impressive network of responders. California State Parks, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, State Parks Lifeguards, ambulance services, and Caltrans all played crucial roles in the emergency response.
