Man Freed After 10 Years in Jail Without Conviction

After 10 years behind bars without a conviction, Ibrahim Usman walked free from a Lagos courtroom when Justice Rahman Oshodi ruled that prosecution never proved their case against him. The judge didn't mince words, calling Usman's prolonged detention a grave institutional failure.

Usman was arrested in June 2016 over allegations involving a minor in Lagos. But prosecutors didn't file charges until nine months later, and what followed exposed serious cracks in Nigeria's criminal justice system.

Between 2017 and 2020, custodial authorities at Kirikiri Maximum Security Centre repeatedly failed to bring Usman to court despite multiple production warrants. One judge struck out the case in 2020 because the defendant couldn't be produced. Prosecutors didn't even know he was still in custody.

When the case was reassigned years later, authorities again failed to bring Usman to court between December 2023 and January 2024. He finally appeared before Justice Oshodi in March 2024, after spending years in limbo.

At trial, prosecutors called just one witness: a doctor who interpreted another doctor's report. Under questioning, he admitted he never examined the alleged victim. The original doctor never testified, and the medical report was never submitted as evidence.

Justice Oshodi found that prosecutors failed to prove the victim's age, didn't call the complainant to testify, and provided no evidence linking Usman to any crime. "The prosecution's evidence was so manifestly insufficient that it required no answer," the judge ruled.

The Bright Side

While Usman's decade-long ordeal reveals painful truths about justice delayed, his release shows Nigeria's courts are willing to hold the system accountable. Justice Oshodi didn't just free an innocent man. He issued a stinging rebuke of everyone who failed Usman.

The judge highlighted that Lagos created the Criminal Information System specifically to prevent cases like this by tracking defendants through the justice system. When these tools aren't used properly, innocent people languish in jail at taxpayers' expense while their cases gather dust.

Justice Oshodi's ruling sends a clear message: production warrants are lawful commands, not suggestions. Courts won't tolerate institutional negligence that robs people of years they can never get back.

On that Tuesday in Lagos, Ibrahim Usman heard four words that changed everything: "He is to be released forthwith." After 3,650 days waiting for justice, it finally arrived.
