When Li Guoyou made a promise to watch over a restaurant owner's remote mountain house in 1998, he had no idea it would take 25 years of his life.

The 63-year-old Chinese man recently walked into a police station in Pingtan, southwestern Sichuan province, to register his official household identity for the first time in nearly three decades. It marked the end of an isolation so complete that his own family thought he might be dead.

Li's story began in 1987 when he left home at 24, searching for better work in Guangzhou. Over the years, he lost touch with his two brothers, his only remaining family after their parents passed away. A brief visit home in 1997 missed them entirely, and the landline number he left behind never connected.

Everything changed in 1998 when Li moved to Harbin in northeastern China. There, a highway restaurant owner named Lin gave him work and a place to belong. When Lin needed someone to care for her isolated mountain property, Li agreed without hesitation.

For the next 25 years, Li kept his word. He lived off the land, growing corn, raising livestock, and fishing to survive. The nearest grocery store sat 3 kilometers away, but Li rarely made the journey. He stayed put, faithful to his promise even as the years stretched on and Lin herself apparently forgot about the arrangement.
