Man Loses 208kg, Runs Half Marathon After Doctor's Warning

🦸 Hero Alert

Llewellyn Davies was told he wouldn't live to see 35 if he didn't lose weight. Now 38 and 208kg lighter, he's racing toward a marathon.

When doctors told Llewellyn Davies he wouldn't survive to see his 35th birthday, the nearly 300kg man had a choice to make. His father had died at 34, and Davies refused to follow the same path.

The New Zealand shepherd's struggle with weight started in childhood, after losing his dad at age 7. Placed in a boys' home at 14, he learned to fight for every meal in an environment where food was scarce.

"We were starved a lot in the boys' homes, which forced us to fight," Davies said. As an adult, his relationship with food flipped entirely, using it to numb emotional pain and build a protective physical presence.

By 2020, Davies weighed nearly 300kg and wound up in the hospital with sepsis. His doctor's blunt warning became his turning point: lose weight or die young, just like his father.

Davies chose bariatric surgery, but the preparation alone demanded incredible discipline. For five months before the operation, he consumed only meal replacement drinks and one boiled egg daily, losing 70kg and proving to himself he could change.

The surgery worked. Davies dropped from 300kg to 92kg, shedding the equivalent weight of three or four people.

Why This Inspires

In January 2026, while dealing with heartbreak, Davies discovered running. For someone who once joked that his only running was "after sheep or to the fridge," the transformation felt miraculous.

"When you've been like Jabba the Hutt and you become like Tinkerbell, you just want to fly," he said. Running calmed his mind and gave him a new way to process emotions.

In April, Davies signed up for an 11.5km race at Ultra Wānaka but switched to the half marathon at the last minute. Crossing the finish line in three hours and 24 minutes, he was overwhelmed by crowds of strangers cheering for his success.

"My eyes were just crying," Davies said. "It's such a foreign thing for me to accept that people are genuinely wanting you to win."

Now 38 years old, three years past the age doctors predicted he'd reach, Davies has his sights set on a full marathon and beyond. For anyone struggling with their own journey, his message is simple: just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
