Man Quits Job, Rescues 200+ Animals in Coimbatore

Naresh Akil couldn't ignore what he kept seeing on the streets of Coimbatore. Pets discarded like trash, left to fend for themselves in a world that suddenly didn't want them.

In 2025, he made a decision that shocked everyone around him. He quit his job and founded Thozhuvam, an animal sanctuary dedicated to creatures nobody else would take.

People told him it was impossible. "People said it wouldn't work," Naresh recalls. "I just kept showing up."

He converted land into a refuge and started taking in abandoned animals one by one. Dogs, cats, and eventually creatures from 35 different species found their way to his gates.

Today, Thozhuvam houses over 200 rescued animals. Each one has a story of abandonment, illness, or injury that brought them to Naresh's doorstep.

The operation runs on dedication more than money. Just seven people, including Naresh and his wife who live on site full-time, care for the entire sanctuary.

Every morning starts before dawn with feeding rounds. The couple checks on animals recovering from injuries, administers medicine, and makes sure every creature gets individual attention.

The Ripple Effect

Thozhuvam isn't just saving animals. It's changing how the community thinks about abandoned pets.

Local residents who once ignored strays now bring them to the sanctuary. Veterinarians volunteer their time. Donors send food and supplies when they can.

Naresh's example shows what's possible when one person refuses to accept cruelty as normal. His sanctuary proves that caring for the vulnerable isn't naive or impractical.

The work is exhausting and endless. But when Naresh walks through Thozhuvam at sunset and sees 200 animals who would otherwise be dead, the choice to quit his job makes perfect sense.
