Man Rescued Alive After 10 Days Trapped in Nepal Tunnel

Against overwhelming odds, rescue workers in Nepal found life where they least expected it.

A Chinese national emerged alive from a collapsed tunnel on Saturday, a full 10 days after a catastrophic flash flood tore through a Himalayan valley. The survivor had been trapped since a massive wall of ice, rock and mud crashed through the region in late August.

The rescue comes amid one of Nepal's deadliest natural disasters in recent years. More than 1,300 people lost their lives when the flash flood struck, destroying homes and infrastructure across the mountain region.

Search teams had been working around the clock since the disaster hit. Most expected to find only bodies as the days stretched on, but they refused to give up hope.

When rescuers finally reached the trapped man on Saturday, he was conscious and responsive. His survival after more than a week without proper food, water or medical care stunned emergency workers on the scene.
