Man Survives 150-Foot Cliff Fall in New Zealand

When a man tumbled up to 150 feet down a cliff near Butterfly Bay in New Zealand's Northland region Saturday night, his chances looked grim. But five hours later, he walked away virtually unharmed in what rescuers are calling a miracle.

The 53-year-old called police at 9:42 PM, but poor cell reception turned the rescue into a puzzle. Long stretches passed where emergency crews couldn't reach him by phone or text, leaving them uncertain of his exact location on the steep cliff face north of Tauranga Bay.

Detective Sergeant Ryan Cooper of Northland Search and Rescue coordinated teams attacking the problem from both above and below. One rescuer used "sound line techniques" to locate the trapped hiker, an incredibly difficult task that required saddling the side of the cliff in darkness.

A Northern Emergency Services Trust helicopter tried to reach him but couldn't navigate the strong winds and treacherous terrain. Instead, a rope rescue team carefully descended to his position, finally winching him to safety at 2:36 AM.

Despite falling the equivalent of a 15-story building and spending over five hours exposed on a cliff face, the man suffered only minor scrapes and bruises. He was reunited with his son at a nearby campground shortly after.

The Bright Side

This rescue showcased everything that goes right when trained professionals work together under pressure. The hiker stayed calm enough to maintain sporadic contact despite his terrifying situation. Rescuers adapted when the helicopter couldn't reach him, switching to rope techniques in challenging conditions.

The combination of LandSAR expertise, police coordination, and sheer determination turned what could have been a tragedy into a story of survival. Cooper praised the team effort that brought the man home safely.

Weather didn't cooperate. Cell service barely worked. The terrain fought them every step. But the rescue teams kept searching, kept problem-solving, and kept believing they'd find him alive.

And they did.
