A baby girl is safe today because a stranger decided her life was worth any risk, even though he can't swim.
Lio Cundiff was at Belmont Harbor in Chicago on Wednesday afternoon when he saw something terrifying unfold. A powerful gust of wind sent a stroller carrying an 8-month-old girl rolling straight into Lake Michigan's icy waters.
The baby's mother stood frozen in panic on the shore. Other witnesses rushed to help, but Cundiff didn't wait to see who would act first.
"I see a stroller getting blown into the lake and a lady screaming," Cundiff told ABC7 Chicago. "I can tell she was too panicked to do anything, so I was like, 'I guess I'm jumping in.'"
He plunged into the dangerously cold water without a second thought. "That baby was… I wasn't going to let that baby die. That's crazy," he said.

Cundiff reached the stroller just in time. "I'm just glad the stroller was up, not face down," he said from his hospital bed, where doctors monitored his heart overnight after the rescue. "The baby dipped under a couple times, but I was able to keep her up. And she was breathing and crying when we got her out."
Other witnesses helped pull both Cundiff and the baby safely back onto dry land. The little girl was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital for observation and was listed in good condition.
Sunny's Take
What makes this story remarkable isn't just that Cundiff saved a life. It's that he did it despite his own limitations and fears. He didn't know if he'd make it back to shore. He didn't calculate the risk to his own health in water cold enough to send him to the hospital. He just knew a baby needed help, and he was there.
That split-second choice reminds us what humans are capable of when it matters most. Not superhuman strength or special training, just ordinary people making extraordinary decisions when someone else's life hangs in the balance.
A mother brought her baby home safe because a stranger didn't hesitate.
