Man Who Gave 10,000 Care Packages Gets Surprise of His Own

One man received the first gift of his entire 60-year life from a care package, and that moment changed everything for James Symons.

When James started Toolbox Project Niagara in 2017, he set a modest goal of delivering 25 care packages filled with hygiene products, snacks, winter gear, and something fun to unhoused community members. The Niagara region responded with overwhelming support, helping him deliver 364 packages that first year.

The numbers kept climbing. The second year brought 550 packages. Each year the total grew, and this year Toolbox will deliver its 10,000th care package.

James never sought recognition for his work. But his longtime friend Ryan Dudley saw something worth celebrating and nominated him for a Random Act of Kindness award from Niagara-on-the-Lake Local.

The surprise unfolded when James thought he was just hearing about an upcoming basketball game. Instead, players from his beloved Niagara River Lions walked in, including his favorite player Keonté Kennedy. James received a VIP game experience, a plaque, and photos with the team.

"I was surprised. I really had no idea what was happening," James said. "I didn't expect to receive a gift."

Behind every care package stands an army of supporters. James' parents have been there since day one, gathering supplies and making deliveries as beloved volunteers known as "the elves." The entire Niagara community has rallied around Toolbox, turning one person's compassion into a decade-long movement.

Ryan's friendship with James began in university, where James worked behind the scenes on the basketball team. Ryan always treated him as an equal member of the squad, never as lesser-than support staff. That respect planted seeds that grew into a friendship strong enough to recognize quiet heroism years later.

James remains humble about reaching 10,000 packages, quickly redirecting credit to his family and community partners. For him, the real gift isn't the recognition but the journey itself and the friendships formed along the way.
