Over 8,000 fans packed a Manchester arena Saturday night to watch their hometown Thunder snatch victory from the jaws of a tie with just seconds left on the clock.

The Netball Super League Grand Final came down to the wire. With the score locked at 51-51 and under a minute remaining, Thunder's Eleanor Cardwell sank a two-point super shot that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Australian Sophie Fawns sealed the 54-51 win moments later, capping her first season in England with a championship ring and player of the match honors.

The victory marked Thunder's first title since 2022 and their fifth overall. They entered as favorites after topping the regular season table, but London Pulse, the defending champions, pushed them to the absolute limit.

Cardwell led Thunder with 20 goals in a game where precision shooting made all the difference. Thunder converted 11 super shots compared to Pulse's four, and those extra points proved decisive in the tightest of margins.

The 31-year-old Cardwell returned to Manchester this season after three years playing elite netball in Australia, still working her way back from a serious knee injury. Coming home to win a championship made the journey even sweeter.

For Thunder's head coach Karen Greig, bringing a major final to Manchester sent a powerful message beyond the scoreboard. "It was important to show the netball community that there is a hunger for netball in the north," she told BBC Sport after the match.

Thousands of young fans went home Saturday night having watched their heroes compete at the highest level, just minutes from their own neighborhoods. Greig, who lives a short distance from the arena, called it a proud moment for the sport's growth outside London.

The atmosphere itself told a story of progress. Cardwell remembers the 2012 Grand Final played in a small sports hall where she could easily spot her parents in the crowd. This time, in a packed major arena with Manchester buzzing outside, she couldn't find them among the sea of faces.
