Manitoba Donates $4M From U.S. Liquor Sales to Kids' Charities

When Manitoba pulled American alcohol from store shelves during trade tensions, officials found a way to turn political conflict into community support.

Two children's charities just received $4 million from the sale of those U.S. liquor products. The Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba got $3 million, while the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba received $1 million to support pediatric care and equipment for vulnerable kids.

This marks the second wave of charitable donations from the alcohol sales. In mid-December, Manitoba donated $2.6 million to organizations including the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board and Harvest Manitoba.

The story started when trade tensions prompted Manitoba to remove U.S.-made alcohol from Liquor Mart stores. Rather than waste the inventory, the province decided to sell it and donate every dollar to charity.

By the end of December, Manitoba had sold $6.9 million worth of American liquor products to customers, restaurants, bars, and private retailers. The province announced it will continue selling remaining U.S. alcohol inventory with all proceeds going to charitable organizations.

The Ripple Effect

What began as a political statement became a funding windfall for Manitoba's most vulnerable residents. The $3 million going to the Child Nutrition Council will help feed children across the province, while the hospital foundation funds will support sick kids and their families during difficult times.

Together with earlier donations, Manitoba has now channeled $6.6 million toward local charities from these sales. The province hasn't announced which organizations will receive future donations, but officials confirmed more funding will come as remaining inventory sells.
