Mariners Star Wins Fan's Shoes After Batting Practice Bet

A playful bet between a baseball star and a trash-talking fan turned into one of the most entertaining moments of the MLB season.

Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez was taking batting practice at Houston's Daikin Park when a fan started heckling him from the stands. The fan challenged Rodríguez to hit a specific car dealership sign below the train tracks and offered up his shoes if the slugger could do it.

A few pitches later, Rodríguez drilled the Lexus sign dead center. He immediately stepped out of the batting cage and walked over to claim his prize.

"Edgar threw the second pitch, like, a nice one up and in and I put a good swing on it and literally hit the 'Lexus' sign right in the middle," Rodríguez said. "And I literally walked out the cage and said, 'Give me your shoes!'"

The fan handed over his well-worn flip-flops, which Rodríguez picked up while wearing batting gloves. But the moment turned from competitive to compassionate when Rodríguez noticed the fan heading back to his seat barefoot.

"You look a little sad walking up the stairs," Rodríguez told the man before returning the flip-flops.
