Marlins Honor 2003 World Series Heroes Beckett and Willis

Twenty-three years after the Florida Marlins shocked the baseball world as underdogs, two heroes from that championship team are getting the recognition they deserve.

The Miami Marlins announced Saturday that pitchers Josh Beckett and Dontrelle Willis will join the 2026 Marlins Legends Hall of Fame. The honor celebrates players who made significant contributions both on the field and in the South Florida community.

Beckett's crowning moment came in Game 6 of the 2003 World Series at Yankee Stadium. The 23-year-old pitched on just three days' rest and delivered a complete game shutout, tagging out Jorge Posada himself for the final out to clinch the championship.

It remains the only shutout to clinch a World Series since 1991. Despite battling blisters throughout his Marlins career, Beckett still ranks second all-time in franchise ERA and first in strikeouts per nine innings.

Willis brought pure joy to baseball that same season. The 21-year-old arrived from Double-A Carolina in May 2003 and immediately captivated fans with his sideways cap and distinctive delivery.

He earned National League Rookie of the Year honors by going 14-6 with a 3.30 ERA. Two years later, Willis became the only 20-game winner in Marlins history, leading the majors with 22 wins, seven complete games, and five shutouts.
