Wind turbines spinning against blue sky in Lithuanian countryside generating clean renewable energy

Mars Powers 250,000 Homes with New Lithuanian Wind Farm

🤯 Mind Blown

Candy and pet food giant Mars just locked in a deal to help build a massive wind farm in Lithuania that will power a quarter million homes and slash 120,000 tons of CO₂ annually. The 2028 project shows how big companies can kickstart clean energy infrastructure that benefits entire countries.

When a candy bar company helps power hundreds of thousands of homes, you know the clean energy revolution is getting real.

Mars, the family-owned business behind M&Ms, Snickers, and Pedigree pet food, just signed a long-term deal with European Energy to buy most of the electricity from Lithuania's planned Skuodas Wind Farm. The project will generate 490 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity every year when it goes live in 2028.

That's enough clean power to run about 250,000 homes annually. It also means 120,000 tons of carbon dioxide that won't enter our atmosphere each year.

The wind farm wasn't a sure thing until Mars stepped up with a financial commitment. By agreeing to buy the power long-term, the company gave developers the certainty they needed to break ground on the 158.4 megawatt project.

"This agreement with European Energy helps bring new wind power online in Lithuania and strengthens our ability to extend credible renewable electricity across our value chain," said Kevin Rabinovitch, Mars's Global VP of Sustainability. The company plans the wind farm will help power its Lithuanian pet food factory while supporting the country's energy independence.

The Ripple Effect

Mars isn't stopping in Lithuania. In 2025, the company launched more than 100 solar projects in Poland and three more in the U.S. Earlier this year, they secured 70% of the output from Sweden's Kölvallen Wind Farm.

The company calls it their Renewables Acceleration Program, and the goal is ambitious: reduce their total carbon footprint by 10% by 2030. That includes electricity for their entire supply chain, not just their own factories.

Jens-Peter Zink, Deputy CEO of European Energy, highlighted how corporate deals like this translate climate pledges into actual infrastructure. "We are bringing the Skuodas wind farm forward and adding substantial new, domestically produced capacity to Lithuania's energy mix," he said.

The deal shows how businesses with deep pockets can do more than just buy renewable energy credits. By committing early to unbuilt projects, they help new clean energy infrastructure come to life faster.

When your chocolate fix helps build wind farms, that's a win worth celebrating.
