Mars Rover Finds Beautiful Striped Rock Layers on Red Planet

A robot geologist on Mars just found something beautiful that could help us understand the Red Planet's history.

NASA's Curiosity rover discovered stunning striped rock layers while crossing into new terrain on Mars in early July. The pinstriped bedrock formations appeared after the rover drove about 36 feet to the edge of a geological boundary between smooth, sandy ground and rougher rocky surfaces.

The discovery happened on Sol 4942, which is Mars-speak for the rover's 4,942nd day exploring the Red Planet. When Curiosity's cameras captured images after the drive, they revealed a field of exposed bedrock with gorgeous layered patterns that excited the science team back on Earth.

These aren't just pretty rocks. The layers tell a story about how Mars formed over millions of years, like pages in a history book written in stone.
