Mars Secures 70% of Swedish Wind Farm for Clean Energy Push

Mars just made one of its largest renewable energy bets in Europe, and it's turning Swedish wind into power for M&Ms, Snickers, and pet food across its supply chain.

The company secured 70% of the output from Sweden's newly built Kölvallen Wind Farm through a long-term agreement announced in February 2026. That translates to roughly 670 gigawatt hours of clean electricity every year, enough to support both Mars' own factories and its network of suppliers.

The wind farm itself is massive. With 277 megawatts of installed capacity, it generates enough renewable energy to power about 95,000 homes annually. It's one of Europe's most advanced onshore wind projects and is expected to become climate neutral within months of starting operations.

Mars didn't just sign a contract. The company provided the long-term commitment that developer Foresight Energy Infrastructure Partners needed to secure financing and break ground on construction. Without that guaranteed buyer, the project might never have gotten off the ground.

"Through the Renewable Acceleration Program, we are making renewables the standard for our entire value chain," said Kevin Rabinovitch, Mars' Global VP of Sustainability. The company launched this program to extend clean energy beyond just its own operations to include suppliers and partners.

The Ripple Effect

The wind farm creates benefits that reach far beyond Mars' bottom line. Local communities will receive funding through a revenue-sharing arrangement tied to the wind farm's annual earnings. The project also generated skilled construction jobs and will support ongoing employment in the region for decades.

Mars made a similar move in Poland last year, launching more than 100 solar projects in 2025. Each new renewable contract chips away at the company's ambitious goal: a 10% reduction in total carbon emissions by 2030, measured against 2015 levels.

For perspective, Mars is a $65 billion family-owned business with 170,000 employees worldwide producing everything from Royal Canin pet food to Pringles. Getting a company that size to run on renewable energy requires partnerships on a matching scale.

The Kölvallen deal shows how major corporations can drive renewable energy development forward by making the financial commitments that get projects built.
