A Georgia foundation honoring a teen who died days before graduation is now offering scholarships to students at all three Troup County high schools. Nine awards totaling over $10,000 will help seniors pursue their dreams in 2026.

A foundation created to honor a Georgia teen who died just days before her 2024 graduation is expanding its reach to help even more students chase their college dreams.

The Mary Joy Moosman Foundation announced nine scholarships available to seniors across all three Troup County high schools. Last year, awards were only available at Mary Joy's school, Troup High.

"Even though we're rivals, as far as the high schools go, we still want to make it available to all of Troup County seniors who would qualify to just spread joy and kindness in Mary Joy's honor," said Amber Moosman, Mary Joy's mother.

Mary Joy was known as an exceptional student who loved tutoring others. She also played varsity soccer and competed in cheer for the Troup Tigers. She worked two jobs to save money for college before her life was cut short in a car accident.

The foundation will award three types of scholarships at each school: academic, cheer, and soccer. Troup High School recipients will receive $1,500 each, while LaGrange and Callaway students will receive $500 each.

Applications are open through March 13. Students can find requirements and apply at lovelikemaryjoy.com/scholarships.

The scholarship funds come from two community events. The annual Joy Ride celebration happens June 19 at Johnny's Pizza in West Point, featuring live music from KIT+CHAR. Mary Joy's Lemonade Stands will pop up around the community on July 25.

The Ripple Effect

What started as one mother's grief has become a countywide movement of generosity. By expanding beyond school rivalries, the foundation is teaching an entire community that kindness matters more than competition.

"Every scholarship and act of kindness helps my family and I keep our baby alive," Amber said. She wants Mary Joy remembered for her humble, selfless love and the good deeds she inspired in others.

The foundation has given Amber hope that her daughter's legacy will continue. Through these scholarships, Mary Joy is still helping students reach for their dreams and making the world a little brighter.

Nine students will soon discover that a young woman they may never have met is changing their future forever.
