Maryland Teens Win State Wrestling and Shot Put Titles

Two Maryland high school athletes just proved that hard work and talent know no age limits.

Calvert County's Board of Education honored Northern High School students Kayla Scott and Jake Kurtz at their April 23 meeting for winning state championships in their respective sports. The recognition celebrates months of early morning practices, weekend competitions, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Senior Kayla Scott won the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association 2025-2026 championship for indoor shot put in the 3S division. She also finished as runner-up in the regional and conference meets, capping off years of dedication to track and field throughout her high school career.

Freshman Jake Kurtz made an even bigger splash in his first varsity season. He won the state wrestling championship in the 106-pound division and finished his debut year with an impressive 50-2 record.

Kurtz also claimed titles at the Clash at the Creek Tournament and the Easton New Year's Brawl. His outstanding performance earned him the No. 4 ranking among 106-pound public school wrestlers in Maryland.

The Ripple Effect

These victories extend beyond individual glory. Scott's years of leadership set an example for younger athletes about persistence and dedication. Kurtz's freshman success shows incoming students that age doesn't limit achievement when you commit fully to your goals.

The Board of Education thanked Scott's coaches and Kurtz's coaching team of Tony Hipszer, Mike Yankanich, and Mike Dowling for their guidance. Strong mentorship combined with family support created the foundation for these championship runs.
