Offshore wind turbines spinning in ocean waters near Martha's Vineyard Massachusetts coast

Massachusetts Locks In 50% Cheaper Offshore Wind Energy

😊 Feel Good

Massachusetts residents just started seeing major savings on their electric bills thanks to a locked-in price for offshore wind power that's half the cost of winter market rates. The 20-year contract could save ratepayers $1.4 billion while providing clean, stable energy from 62 turbines off Martha's Vineyard.

Massachusetts families are about to catch a break on their energy bills, and it's coming from giant turbines spinning 15 miles off the coast.

Governor Maura Healey announced this week that the state's contract with Vineyard Wind 1 is now active, locking in electricity prices at $69.50 per megawatt-hour. That's less than half what residents paid during this past brutal winter, when prices soared above $180 per megawatt-hour in January.

The difference means real money back in people's pockets. Customers will save an average of 1.4 cents per kilowatt-hour compared to the unpredictable open market prices.

Before this contract kicked in, energy from the offshore wind farm was sold on the open market, where prices jumped and dropped based on supply and demand. This past winter saw particularly high costs because extreme cold and severe weather drove up energy needs across the region.

Now, three major utilities (National Grid USA, Eversource Energy, and Unitil Corp.) will buy 800 megawatts of wind power at that fixed rate for the next 20 years. The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities approved the deal back in 2019.

The math adds up fast. Over the life of these contracts, Massachusetts ratepayers could collectively save $1.4 billion.

As of mid-April, 55 of the project's 62 turbines were generating power, though not all at full capacity yet. The remaining turbines are still being commissioned and tested before they can actively produce revenue.

The Ripple Effect

This milestone does more than just lower individual electric bills. It strengthens the entire New England grid by adding a major source of reliable, clean energy right when the region needs it most.

Fixed-price renewable energy protects communities from the price shocks that hit hardest during extreme weather events. When demand spikes during heat waves or cold snaps, ratepayers with access to locked-in wind prices won't see their bills skyrocket.

The stable pricing also makes household budgets more predictable. Families can plan their expenses without worrying about surprise energy cost increases during the coldest or hottest months.

Massachusetts is showing how smart long-term energy planning can deliver both environmental benefits and real financial relief for everyday people.

Cleaner air, lower bills, and energy security for the next two decades is a winning combination for the Bay State.
