Maui Mom Celebrates 1 Year Cancer-Free With Fitness Challenge

Hero Alert

Katie Folio paddled through breast cancer treatment without stopping her workouts. Now she's raising funds to help other women get life-saving screenings.

One year after beating breast cancer, Katie Folio is celebrating the best way she knows how: sweating it out with her community.

The Maui mother of two thought she was training hard for paddling season last year. Instead, that strength carried her through a shocking breast cancer diagnosis, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Folio kept working out through it all. "I would do whatever I could do. It wasn't pretty, but I had a lot of support and I just kept it up," she said.

Her diagnosis came as a complete surprise. "It's not in my family at all," Folio explained. "But 90 to 95% of breast cancer is not related to family history, which I did not know until I got my diagnosis."

This weekend, Level Up Maui is hosting a grueling fitness event in Folio's honor. The HYROX challenge features eight one-kilometer runs separated by intense exercise sets, testing both strength and endurance.

"Katie has shown that over the last year, you need to have strength and endurance to get through hard things," said Jackie Cox, the gym's owner. Folio laughed about getting "suckered into" the event but couldn't be more excited.

The Ripple Effect

The challenge is already making waves beyond the gym. Proceeds benefit Kokua 4 a Cause, a program that covers mammogram and biopsy costs for uninsured and underinsured women on Maui.

For women who can't afford screenings, these funds could mean the difference between early detection and advanced disease. Folio knows firsthand how crucial those screenings are.

Now a breast cancer awareness advocate, she shares one clear message: "You need to pay attention to your body. I think it's really important to stay strong before, during, after whatever happens in your life."

Starting from a place of physical and mental strength helped Folio survive treatment and come out ready for her next challenge. This Sunday, the public is invited to join her at Level Up Maui and prove their own resilience while supporting a critical cause.
