Messi Bathed Baby Lamine Yamal in 2007 Charity Shoot

When photographer Joan Monfort captured a young Lionel Messi cradling a smiling baby in Barcelona's Camp Nou dressing room in 2007, he had no idea he was documenting the meeting of two football legends.

That baby was five-month-old Lamine Yamal. This Sunday, the 19-year-old will face 39-year-old Messi in the World Cup final.

Lamine Yamal's parents had won a raffle run by Catalan newspaper Sport and children's charity Unicef. Winners got professional photos of their babies with Barcelona first-team players, and by pure chance, they were paired with Messi.

"Messi is a really introverted guy, very timid and shy," Monfort remembers. "He came into the dressing room and suddenly had to take these photos with a proper baby, and his face changed like he had no idea what to do!"

The photographer lost track of the images until 2024, when Lamine Yamal's father posted one on Instagram after his son helped Spain win Euro 2024. He captioned it "The beginning of two legends."

Lamine Yamal grew up in Rocafonda, a working-class neighborhood 20 miles north of Barcelona. His parents, who had moved to Catalonia as children, struggled financially when he was born.

According to Spanish media, his father was so grateful to two friends who helped pay their bills that he named his son after them. Lamine means honest or trustworthy in Arabic, while Yamal is a variant of Jamal, meaning elegance or beauty.

"If you don't have money, it's very hard to help your child play football," Yamal told El Pais. "My parents managed to make all that happen. It's something I'll never be able to repay them for."

By his 19th birthday, Messi had scored 11 career goals and won La Liga once. Lamine Yamal has already scored 56 goals and won La Liga three times, plus Euro 2024.

Monfort, now 58, sees Sunday's match as the perfect ending to a story that began almost two decades ago. "I think we are closing the cycle of their story," he says.
