Metallica Donates £20K to Cardiff Foodbank After Sell-Out Show

When Cardiff Foodbank CEO Rachel Biggs opened an email saying Metallica wanted to donate £20,000, she thought it had to be a scam.

But it was real. The American rock band, fresh off their sold-out Principality Stadium concert Sunday, had chosen the struggling charity as their latest recipient through their All Within My Hands foundation.

The timing couldn't have been better. Two weeks earlier, the foodbank had posted a desperate plea on social media. Their warehouse shelves were emptier than they'd ever seen, and donations were down 27% from last year while demand remained sky high.

"It's an incredible amount of money which will make such a difference and replenish our empty shelves," Rachel said. The donation will provide 9,000 meals for people across Cardiff.

Cardiff Foodbank supports 20,000 people annually through eight centers and a mobile delivery service. Last year, one third of the people they fed were children. Their estimated running costs for 2024 are £700,000, but donations have dropped even as need stays constant.

The Ripple Effect

Metallica launched their foundation in 2017 with a simple mission: give back to every community they visit. A portion of ticket sales from each concert goes to local charities, with foodbanks becoming a major focus across their world tours.

The band didn't stop at money. They partnered with the Welsh Blood Service to encourage fans to donate blood and plasma, running special donation sessions before and after their Cardiff concert.

For volunteer Eddie Cawston, a lifelong Metallica fan who had tickets to Sunday's show, the donation hit home. "It shows that people who can make a difference are prepared to make a difference," he said. "They're thinking about people less fortunate than themselves."

Fellow volunteer Vivian Horwood agreed. "This donation shows they are sharing and caring," she said.

Metallica joins other major artists supporting Cardiff Foodbank. Taylor Swift donated during her Eras Tour stop in 2024, buying enough food to fill one and a half articulated lorries. But Rachel confirmed Metallica's contribution is their largest celebrity donation to date.

Beyond the immediate food purchase, Rachel emphasized how celebrity support mobilizes communities and raises awareness about food insecurity affecting thousands of Welsh families.

When the donation hits their account, Cardiff Foodbank will place a bulk order to restock those empty shelves and secure supplies for the months ahead.
