Mexico and Canada Want USMCA Extended Through 2042

Mexico and Canada have both formally asked to extend their free trade agreement with the United States through 2042, adding 16 years of economic certainty to North America's partnership.

The request came through official letters sent this month by Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard and Canada's Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc. Both nations expressed strong support for the USMCA, which has governed trade between the three countries since 2020.

Mexico's announcement followed nationwide public consultations that revealed overwhelmingly positive views of the agreement. Businesses and citizens praised the pact as a tool that creates jobs, attracts investment, and provides legal certainty for planning ahead.

"Almost six years after the USMCA took force, Mexico reaffirms its commitment to the shared prosperity of North America," Ebrard wrote in his letter. He emphasized that continuing growth requires giving investors confidence in the market's stability.

Canada's trade minister echoed similar enthusiasm, calling the USMCA "highly beneficial to each of our countries and to the integrated North American economy." The agreement currently covers around $2 trillion in annual trade among the three nations.

The extension requests arrive as the countries engage in their scheduled review process this year. Mexico and U.S. representatives just wrapped up their first formal round of talks in late May, making progress on automotive manufacturing rules, steel and aluminum trade, and regional economic security.

The Ripple Effect

The push for extension reflects real confidence in regional cooperation at a time when global trade faces uncertainty. By requesting a 16-year extension now, Mexico and Canada are sending a clear message to businesses: North America remains committed to integrated supply chains and shared prosperity.

The agreement has already strengthened manufacturing across the continent, making North America one of the world's most competitive production platforms. Companies from all three countries have invested billions based on the stability the pact provides.

Even if the three nations don't agree on an extension during this year's review, the earliest the agreement could end would be 2036. That built-in protection gives businesses more than a decade to plan regardless of the current negotiations.

A second round of bilateral talks between Mexico and the United States is scheduled for mid-June in Washington. Topics will continue focusing on ways to strengthen supply chains and boost regional competitiveness.
