Mexico and Korea Build $3.3B Clean Energy Plant Together

Mexico and Korea are building a future that nobody in 1902 could have imagined when Korean migrants first arrived in Mexico.

The two nations just announced a $649 million Kia electric vehicle plant in Nuevo León, complete with its own charging network and clean power generation. It's part of a much bigger story: Korean companies have invested $11.5 billion in Mexico since 2006, operating more than 2,000 businesses across the country.

The numbers keep climbing. Bilateral trade hit $27 billion in 2025, making Korea one of Mexico's five largest trading partners. Mexico ranks as Korea's top partner in all of Latin America.

Samsung is building a $3.3 billion methanol plant in Sinaloa that will be the largest ultralow-emission facility of its kind anywhere on Earth. When it opens in 2029, it will create 6,400 jobs. LG runs eight plants across Mexico, employing 8,100 people and investing another $2.28 billion.

Posco has put more than $800 million into Mexico and now manufactures motor cores for electric vehicles in Coahuila. A complete Korean supply chain is taking root on Mexican soil, transforming how both countries make things.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership reaches beyond factories. Korea's aerospace research institute now serves as a permanent technical adviser to the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency. Korean funding helped rebuild a primary school in Acapulco after Hurricane Otis destroyed it.

President Claudia Sheinbaum's Plan México aims to train 150,000 professionals yearly in strategic sectors like semiconductors, biotechnology, and aerospace. Korean expertise in these fields makes the partnership natural. Mexico's foreign minister traveled to Seoul specifically to meet with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology about collaboration in artificial intelligence and semiconductor training.

The cultural exchange runs just as deep. When BTS visited the National Palace balcony last May, 50,000 people packed the Zócalo, Mexico's most important public square. Mexico has become one of the largest audiences for Korean music worldwide.

Korean fans filled Mexican stadiums for the World Cup in June. The soccer rivalry lasted 90 minutes, but the friendship continues growing.

Both countries are looking ahead to 2028, when Korea takes over the G20 presidency and Mexico hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. A bilateral working group met for the first time in August to expand and balance trade in both directions.

From early migration to satellites and semiconductors, Mexico and Korea show what 120 years of friendship can build when two nations choose to grow together.
