Mexico City Opens $2.60 Train to Felipe Ángeles Airport

😊 Feel Good

A new suburban train line now whisks passengers from central Mexico City to Felipe Ángeles International Airport in just 50 minutes for less than three dollars. The route slashes travel time and costs, making air travel more accessible while breathing new life into Mexico's passenger rail system.

Getting to the airport just became the easiest part of flying for millions of Mexico City residents.

President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated a new suburban train line Sunday connecting central Mexico City's Buenavista station with Felipe Ángeles International Airport, located 40 kilometers north of the city. The journey takes 50 minutes and costs just 45 pesos, about $2.60.

That's a game changer compared to the alternatives. Passengers previously spent up to two hours reaching the airport by car or bus, paying anywhere from $12 to $52 depending on their mode of transport.

The route features seven stations and will initially run four of its 10 trains every half hour. Once fully operational, trains will depart every 12 minutes and complete the journey in 43 minutes, with capacity to transport more than 80,000 passengers daily.

The new line represents more than just convenient airport access. It's part of Mexico's broader mission to restore passenger rail services after decades without them, a project that began under former President López Obrador and has accelerated under Sheinbaum's administration.

Felipe Ángeles International Airport, which opened just over four years ago, is expected to attract significantly more travelers now that reaching it doesn't require an expensive taxi ride or lengthy bus journey. Meanwhile, Buenavista station solidifies its role as the central hub of Mexico's expanding National Railway System.

The Ripple Effect

This affordable rail connection opens up air travel to residents who previously couldn't justify the cost or time of reaching the airport. Students, families, and budget travelers can now access international flights without the stress of navigating traffic or draining their wallets on transportation alone.

The project also honors an often-forgotten historical figure. Sheinbaum requested the airport terminal station be named after Clara Krause, the multilingual teacher and wife of revolutionary general Felipe Ángeles who fled to New York during the Revolution and died of a heart attack after learning of her husband's execution.

Mexico is proving that modern passenger rail isn't just nostalgia, it's smart infrastructure that puts opportunity within reach for everyone.
