Mexico City's 1.5-Ton Sandwich Breaks Guinness Record

A sandwich the length of a football field just made history in Mexico City, and thousands of people got to taste the celebration.

On Wednesday, volunteers at Mexico City's annual Torta Fair created a 100-meter torta weighing 1,570 kilograms (about 1.5 metric tons). Guinness World Records adjudicator Alfredo Arista officially certified the achievement, telling the crowd, "From today you are officially amazing. Congratulations!"

Dozens of cooks wearing caps, masks and gloves assembled the mega-sandwich on long rows of tables in the Venustiano Carranza borough. They used more than 50 varieties of fillings, including ham, breaded pork cutlet, carnitas, mole, seafood and even wild boar.

After assembly, the torta was carefully cut into segments and moved to industrial scales for official weighing. The entire process followed strict hygiene protocols under Guinness supervision to ensure the record would stand.

The achievement surpassed previous attempts at the same festival. In 2024, organizers made a 76-meter torta, followed by a 90-meter version in 2025, but neither received official Guinness certification.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about sandwich bragging rights. The five-day Torta Fair, which runs through Sunday, celebrates Mexico City's everyday cuisine and supports local business.

More than 100 vendors are showcasing torta styles from Mexican states like Jalisco, Puebla and Yucatán, alongside international options from Colombia, Spain and China. Mayor Clara Brugada notes that roughly 10,000 torta businesses operate in the capital, making the fair an important showcase for local commerce.

Organizers expect more than 600,000 visitors and an economic impact above 50 million pesos (about $2.9 million). The event includes concerts, cultural activities and even a pet adoption drive.

Once the weighing was complete, volunteers didn't let the perishable masterpiece go to waste. They divided the entire sandwich and distributed it free among thousands of attendees who'd gathered to witness the record attempt.

Admission to the fair remains free all weekend, giving everyone a chance to celebrate Mexico's beloved sandwich tradition.
