The second targets a fungus affecting grapes, strawberries, and cucumbers, responsible for $587 million in yearly losses. Grape growers in Baja California's renowned wine region are already using it.

The results speak volumes. Two liters per hectare controls over 99% of the targeted fungus, compared to just 80% effectiveness from conventional chemical pesticides. Zarur sees this as a major step away from petroleum-based agricultural chemicals that have dominated farming for decades.

The Ripple Effect

This investment creates more than just cleaner crops. The plant will generate 500 specialized jobs for Mexico City's 11,000 annual life sciences graduates, many of whom currently struggle to find positions matching their expertise.

Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard says the project will launch an entirely new value chain centered on knowledge and innovation. Mexico City already hosts one of Latin America's largest pharmaceutical plant clusters, and the new $125 million Tlalpan Innovation District further demonstrates the country's commitment to biotechnology leadership.

GreenLight plans to expand beyond food crops into strategic products for cotton and other industrial agriculture. Each new product line means more opportunities for Mexican scientists and more proof that sustainable farming doesn't require sacrificing effectiveness.
