Mexico Plants 1.5 Billion Trees in Single Day Event

Mexico just pulled off one of the largest single-day tree planting efforts in history, with 235,000 volunteers planting 1.5 billion trees across the entire country.

The First National Reforestation Day brought together citizens from all 32 states and 621 municipalities in August 2026. Environment Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra coordinated the massive effort, combining manual planting with cutting-edge drone technology to scatter seeds across hard-to-reach areas.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Mexico loses more than 203,000 hectares to deforestation each year, while forest fires devastate another 846,000 hectares. That's precious habitat vanishing in a country that shelters 12% of the world's biodiversity, thanks to its unique position where northern and tropical ecosystems meet.

The reforestation initiative went beyond just planting trees. Volunteers distributed over 6.6 million plants of native and endemic species specifically chosen to restore soil health, protect water cycles, and rebuild ecosystems that have been damaged by fires, pests, and disease.

Local communities played a central role, working alongside federal agencies, state governments, and academic organizations. This wasn't a top-down government project but a true national collaboration bringing together people who depend on healthy forests for their livelihoods.

The benefits extend far beyond counting trees. Mexico's forests represent a quarter percent of the country's GDP, supporting countless families through sustainable forestry. Bárcena emphasized the urgent need for green infrastructure in cities and regenerative practices like sustainable livestock farming in forests and mangroves.

These restored ecosystems will capture carbon, regulate local climates, prevent soil erosion, and protect water sources for generations. The initiative creates a foundation for what officials call a "forest value chain" that makes conservation economically viable for communities living near these precious ecosystems.

The program also demonstrates how technology can amplify human effort. Drones allowed volunteers to reach steep slopes and remote areas where manual planting would be impossible, ensuring restoration happens across diverse terrain from coastal mangroves to mountain forests.
