Miami Cancer Center's Free Festival Celebrates Survivors

Sunshine and laughter filled a Miami shopping plaza as hundreds of cancer survivors danced, stretched, and celebrated life together at a free community festival.

On May 2, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center transformed Vivo! Plaza at Dolphin Mall into a hub of hope. Survivors, families, caregivers, and medical teams gathered for an afternoon dedicated to honoring the journey beyond cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The celebration kicked off with movement. Sylvester's exercise oncology team led strength training and stretching designed for all ability levels, with survivors participating alongside loved ones.

Children dove into arts and crafts while adults reconnected with care teams and fellow patients. Volunteers guided families to activity stations and supportive care tables throughout the plaza.

Dr. Frank Penedo, who directs Sylvester's Survivorship and Supportive Care Institute, welcomed the crowd with a powerful message. "At Sylvester, survivorship means supporting individuals from the moment of diagnosis through treatment and into the rest of their lives," he told attendees.

Dr. Carmen Calfa, the institute's co-director, emphasized why gathering outside clinical walls matters. "Events like this allow us to connect as people, not just as patients and providers," she explained.

The afternoon continued with a mocktail demonstration from Sylvester's oncology nutrition team. Nutrition experts showcased colorful drinks while sharing practical tips for making healthy choices sustainable and enjoyable after treatment.

Music soon filled the plaza as guests clapped and danced together. Survivors rediscovered the joy of movement in a space designed for celebration rather than medical care.

The Ripple Effect

The event strengthened bonds that extend far beyond hospital visits. Faculty and staff engaged in conversations that reinforced relationships continuing long after treatment ends.

Jessica MacIntyre, who leads clinical operations at the institute, highlighted how patient input shapes better care. "When patients and families help shape how care is delivered, we create programs that are more responsive, more compassionate and more effective," she said.

These moments of shared joy help reshape the patient experience in ways clinic visits alone cannot achieve.

The celebration reminded everyone that survivorship isn't a single milestone but an active, evolving journey supported by community, movement, and hope.
