Michael J. Fox Returns to Acting After Ford's Moving Scene

When Michael J. Fox watched Harrison Ford portray a character with Parkinson's disease on Apple TV's "Shrinking," he immediately picked up the phone. The Back to the Future star called his former Spin City boss Bill Lawrence with one question: "Bill, why the f* am I not on the show?"

That phone call led to Fox's first acting role since 2020. After four years away from the screen, he returned to work alongside Ford in a scene that would move everyone involved.

In the Season 3 premiere that aired January 28, Ford's character waits for a doctor's appointment when he meets another Parkinson's patient, played by Fox. The scene paired two of Hollywood's biggest icons, Marty McFly and Indiana Jones, for the very first time.

Fox brought his trademark humor to the moment. When Ford mentions he has Parkinson's and asks what Fox is in for, Fox deadpans, "Just a haircut." He follows up with another joke: "I fall three times a day. I'm thinking of taking up stunt work."

Why This Inspires

The scene affected Fox more deeply than anyone expected. Speaking with Vanity Fair, he shared how Ford's performance caught him off guard with its authenticity.

"I wasn't prepared for how much of his own understanding of the disease he brought to it," Fox said. "I recognized Parkinson's in his eyes. The things I was feeling, I recognized in the way he was expressing himself."

Ford's subtle, powerful portrayal moved Fox to tears. He praised Ford's work, calling him brilliant and noting how the actor brought both depth and fun to the role.

The feeling was mutual. Ford called Fox "an extraordinarily powerful person," and the entire cast felt the weight of the historic pairing.

Co-star Michael Urie captured the mood on set perfectly: "Everyone's hearts grew" when Fox arrived. The anticipation and nostalgia of seeing these two legends work together created something special.
