Michelin Tires Boost EV Range by 10% Without Sacrificing Grip

Electric vehicle drivers might soon squeeze significantly more miles from every charge, thanks to a tire breakthrough from Michelin that doesn't compromise safety for savings.

The French tire maker's new Energy range delivers up to 10% additional driving range for EVs while maintaining top-grade grip and braking performance. For gas and hybrid vehicles, the tires cut fuel consumption too, saving drivers real money over time.

Michelin tested its Primacy 5 Energy tire on a Tesla Model Y, comparing it head-to-head against efficiency-focused competitors from Hankook and Pirelli. The new tire outperformed rivals in longevity, wet braking, and dry braking while earning the highest A rating for rolling resistance.

The breakthrough tackles what engineers call the efficiency-grip trade-off. Traditional low-resistance tires save energy but often sacrifice handling and safety, forcing drivers to choose between range and peace of mind in bad weather.

Michelin claims the Primacy 5 Energy can save about $340 over the tire's lifetime or add up to 70 kilometers of range per charge. That's the difference between making it home and hunting for a charging station on longer trips.

For performance enthusiasts, the Pilot Sport 5 Energy brings the same efficiency gains to sportier driving. The tire was tested during development of the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept XX, where it sustained high speeds over extended periods without the rapid wear that typically plagues high-performance EV tires.
