Michigan Credit Union Awards $25K to 10 Local Students

😊 Feel Good

Ten high school seniors across Michigan just received $2,500 scholarships each to pursue their dreams. Marshall Community Credit Union celebrated its 75th anniversary by investing in the next generation of community leaders.

Ten Michigan high school seniors are heading to college with a little less financial stress and a lot more community support behind them.

Marshall Community Credit Union recently awarded $25,000 in scholarships to local students, giving each recipient $2,500 toward their educational futures. The scholarships work for any accredited college, university, trade school, or technical program the students choose.

The students earned their awards through more than just good grades. Out of 29 applicants from 12 different schools, these ten stood out for their leadership, community service, and commitment to building strong financial futures.

The winners include Jackson Cilla from Coldwater High School, Olivia Compton from Calhoun Christian School, Farah Fowler from Olivet High School, Henry Martin from Marshall High School, and Logan Price from Harper Creek High School. Andrew Root, Ariana Russell, and Brookelyn Stealy all attend Marshall High School, while Aubrey Tarkiewicz rounds out the Marshall representation. Grace Wilbur from Esto Lux Academy completed the group of recipients.

As part of their applications, students had to reflect on financial lessons they've learned, what service means to them, and how they've already made a difference in their communities. These weren't just essay questions. They were windows into how these young people think about their roles as future leaders.

The Ripple Effect

This scholarship program represents more than one year of giving. Since 2014, Marshall Community Credit Union has awarded $132,000 to students pursuing education beyond high school.

The timing makes the 2025 awards extra meaningful. MCCU is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and what better way to mark that milestone than by supporting 75 more years of community growth through education.

Laura Santos, the credit union's community and youth engagement manager, sees these students as more than scholarship recipients. "MCCU is honored to invest in the next generation of leaders, innovators and changemakers," she said.

Each $2,500 award might seem modest compared to the full cost of college, but for many students, it's the difference between choosing a school based on financial aid packages or choosing one based on the best fit for their dreams. It's textbooks for a semester, housing deposits, or reduced loan burden after graduation.

The program shows what happens when local financial institutions remember their "community" mission extends beyond checking accounts and car loans.
