Michigan Lawmaker Builds Habitat Home on Service Day

When Michigan lawmakers took a break from the capitol on Tuesday, they picked up hammers instead of gavels to help build someone's dream home.

State Rep. Ann Bollin joined dozens of volunteers in Southfield for Michigan's Legislative Habitat Build Day, spending the day doing construction work on a Habitat for Humanity home. The hands-on event brought together elected officials, community members, and the future homeowners themselves for a day of service that's turning blueprints into reality.

"Having a safe and stable place to call home can make a tremendous difference for a family," said Bollin, who represents Brighton Township. She worked alongside volunteers throughout the day, experiencing firsthand what it takes to build affordable housing in Oakland County.

Habitat for Humanity's model goes beyond typical charity work. Future homeowners contribute hundreds of hours of volunteer service called "sweat equity" before purchasing their homes through an affordable mortgage program. This partnership approach helps families achieve homeownership while building construction skills and community connections.

The Southfield build site buzzed with activity as volunteers worked on various construction tasks. From framing to finishing work, every nail driven and board placed brought one family closer to holding their own house keys.

The family partnering with Habitat on this home will continue working alongside volunteers until construction completes, then move into a place they helped build with their own hands.
