The center buzzes with professional-grade equipment, from Samsung interactive whiteboards to high-end 3D printers and computer-aided design software. Nearly two dozen volunteer mentors, including engineers and computer scientists from the community, work alongside students on the high school robotics team.

In Florida, Hillsborough County Public Schools recently opened the HCPS/FCDI STEM Center at Adams Middle School, providing robotics competition space for nearly 220,000 students across the district. When a local nonprofit lost its community maker space, the district offered an unused gym in exchange for free access to the organization's STEM programming.

"It was born out of necessity," says Catherine White, the district's K-12 STEM supervisor. The partnership now serves as a model for other large districts seeking creative solutions.

Austin Hall from the STEM Education Coalition says these dedicated facilities are becoming more common nationwide. "It's not because schools suddenly have more resources; it's because they're engaging with outside organizations and foundations that want to support hands-on STEM education."

Back in Hemlock, center director Laura Trombley watches former students return as volunteers, inspired to help the next generation discover their passion. Local colleges and universities now offer scholarships specifically for students who participate in the district's STEM programs.
