Michigan Wins on Final-Second Hail Mary After Celebration

Michigan fans thought their season opener was over when quarterback Bryce Underwood's Hail Mary sailed out of the end zone as time expired against Western Michigan on September 5. Underwood got one more chance from midfield, and this time he found receiver JJ Buchanan in the end zone for a 13-12 victory. Thousands of Michigan fans flooded the field in celebration, turning what seemed like a devastating home loss into an unforgettable comeback.

The Wolverines had struggled all afternoon against the Mid-American Conference opponent. After scoring on their opening drive, Michigan went silent for nearly 60 minutes while racking up nine penalties for 80 yards and three turnovers.

Western Michigan dominated the statistics, outrushing Michigan 132 to 106 yards and controlling the ball for over 40 minutes. The Broncos kicked a field goal with just 35 seconds remaining to take a 12-7 lead, and Michigan faced 93 yards between them and the end zone.

Junior defensive end Dom Nichols kept Michigan alive throughout the game with nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. He sacked Western quarterback Broc Lowry twice and consistently disrupted plays when the Wolverines needed stops most.

Buchanan proved to be the offensive spark, catching more than half of Michigan's passing yards before his miracle touchdown. The transfer from Utah made a spectacular one-handed catch earlier in the game that showcased the athleticism he'd need for the final play.
