Microsoft Signs 140 MW Solar Deal, Creates 300 Jobs

Tech giant Microsoft is putting serious money where its mouth is on clean energy, signing a deal for a massive solar farm in Washington state that will power its operations while creating hundreds of jobs.

Spanish energy company Avangrid announced the partnership this week for its new Bluebird Solar project in Klickitat County. The 140 megawatt facility represents a $300 million investment in the community and will create approximately 300 construction jobs when it breaks ground ahead of its 2028 launch.

This isn't Microsoft's first rodeo with Avangrid. The two companies have already partnered on three other U.S. renewable projects, including solar facilities in Ohio and California that came online last year, plus a wind farm in Washington expected to start producing power later this year. Together, these projects now total more than 500 megawatts of clean energy capacity.

The timing couldn't be better. Microsoft recently hit a major milestone by matching 100% of its annual global electricity consumption with renewable energy purchases. But the company isn't stopping there.

Microsoft has set an ambitious "100/100/0" vision for 2030, committing to match 100% of its electricity use, 100% of the time, with zero carbon energy sources. That's a significantly higher bar than simply offsetting annual consumption, requiring around-the-clock clean power matching.

The Ripple Effect

This deal shows how corporate clean energy commitments create real economic opportunities in communities across America. That $300 million investment in Klickitat County means construction jobs, ongoing maintenance positions, and tax revenue supporting local schools and services for years to come.

Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda emphasized the partnership's community focus. "We are proud to have built a strong relationship with Microsoft to help them meet their energy needs while investing in the communities where we operate," he said.

The agreement also demonstrates growing demand from tech companies for renewable energy as they work to power data centers and operations sustainably. Meeting that demand requires massive infrastructure projects that bring investment and employment to regions with strong solar and wind resources.
