Minnesota High School Wins 18th Straight, Makes History
A Minnesota high school soccer team turned last year's heartbreak into this year's triumph, winning their 18th consecutive game to reach the state semifinals for the first time ever. The Sartell Sabres beat Orono 2-1 in overtime on the same field where their season ended in disappointment just one year ago.
Sometimes the sweetest victories happen exactly where your biggest defeats once did.
The Sartell High School boys soccer team returned to Monticello High School's field in Minnesota with unfinished business. Last year, their season ended there in heartbreak. This time, they left with a 2-1 overtime victory over Orono and a spot in the state semifinals for the first time in school history.
"I've wanted this moment to come back around ever since that day," senior captain Cole Davidson said. "I've been working ever since, and I just knew it'd be back."
The October 29 quarterfinal match stayed scoreless through the first half. Freshman Nolan Guzman finally broke through in the second half, giving Sartell a 1-0 lead that held for 33 tense minutes.
Then Orono's Mason Revering scored in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime. The gut punch could have broken a lesser team.
Instead, it fueled them. Just two minutes into overtime, senior midfielder Ashton Shosted drew a penalty kick.

Coach Caleb Forberg handed the moment to Davidson. "There was no doubt in my mind on the sideline that he was going to put that one in," Forberg said.
Davidson delivered. The penalty kick found the net, securing win number 18 in a row and punching Sartell's ticket to U.S. Bank Stadium.
Why This Inspires
This senior class has transformed Sartell soccer from a good program into a historic one. They went 8-7-1 as sophomores, learning the sting of close losses and the grind of improvement.
Three years later, they're 18-2-0 and guaranteed the longest season in school history. They stuck together through defeat, pushed each other through practice, and returned to the site of their biggest disappointment ready to rewrite the story.
"The boys stuck to the plan," Forberg said. "We talk about it every practice. Just stick with it, don't ride the highs and the lows."
Their semifinal matchup against Cretin-Derham Hall is set for November 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Win or lose, they've already shown an entire community what dedication and resilience can build.
Four years of work, 18 straight wins, and one penalty kick that turned heartbreak into history.
