Mira Nair Brings Trailblazing Artist to Life in New Film

A visionary artist who changed how the world saw India is finally getting her story told on screen, thanks to a filmmaker she's been inspiring for decades.

Mira Nair, the Oscar-nominated director behind "Salaam Bombay!" and "Monsoon Wedding," is wrapping up production on "Amri," a biographical film about Amrita Sher-Gil. The legendary Hungarian-Indian painter became the youngest student ever admitted to Paris's prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts in the 1920s, then revolutionized Indian art by bringing European techniques home to capture the soul of everyday Indian life.

"She taught me how to see," Nair said about Sher-Gil's influence on her own filmmaking. "Every film I've made in the last several decades has been inspired by the art of Amrita Sher-Gil."

The film follows Sher-Gil's journey across Hungary, France, and India in the early 20th century. It explores her artistic awakening, her defiance of social conventions, and her determination to create a visual language entirely her own.

Rising star Anjali Sivaraman leads an impressive international cast as Sher-Gil. Emily Watson plays her mother Marie-Antoinette, while Jaideep Ahlawat portrays her father Umrao Singh. Priyanka Chopra Jonas appears as Madame Azurie and serves as executive producer, while Jim Sarbh and Anjana Vasan round out the ensemble.

Why This Inspires

Producer Samudrika Arora sees timeless relevance in Sher-Gil's story. "There is something deeply human in the tension of coming from two wildly different worlds," she explained. The film celebrates how Sher-Gil navigated her dual heritage without losing herself.

Sher-Gil's radical approach captured ordinary Indian men and women with a palette and perspective that had never been seen before. She transformed European artistic training into something uniquely Indian, honoring the dignity and beauty of everyday people often overlooked by the art world of her time.

Nair co-wrote the screenplay with Clara Royer, drawing on years of studying Sher-Gil's paintings. The director says the artist's "bravery of palette, color and framing of the ordinary people of India has eternally moved me."

Production has taken the team across India and Hungary, retracing the geographical journey that shaped Sher-Gil's imagination and art.

This collaboration brings together voices from Bollywood, Hollywood, and independent cinema to honor an artist whose work bridged East and West long before globalization made such connections commonplace.
