Missing Giraffe Found Safe After 2-Week Texas Adventure

After nearly two weeks of searching the Texas hill country, Gracie the giraffe has been found safe and thriving in the wild.

The reticulated giraffe wandered away from Cedar Hollow Ranch in Leakey, Texas on June 12th, sparking an internet sensation and a massive community search effort. Leakey is a small town of about 700 people located two hours west of San Antonio.

Ranch manager Vick Jones wasn't taking any chances with his wandering friend. He posted a $5,000 reward and launched helicopter and drone search teams to scan the rugged Texas terrain.

The search hit a bump mid-week when false reports claimed Gracie had been found. Sheriff Nathan Johnson had to clear up the confusion, blaming "idiots in their pajamas in their mother's basement" for spreading misinformation online.

But on Friday morning, the aerial search finally paid off. Jones and Jeff Hill of Concho Aviation spotted Gracie from above, nestled peacefully among shrubs about four miles south of her home.

Sheriff Johnson shared the good news on Facebook with overhead photos showing the giraffe looking content in her temporary hideout. According to Johnson, Gracie appeared "fat and happy" when found, with a definite "catch me if you can, suckers" attitude about the whole adventure.

This wasn't a desperate survival situation but rather what looks like a two-week vacation for one adventurous animal. The fact that she was found healthy and well-fed suggests she adapted just fine to her temporary wild lifestyle. Sometimes the best stories are the ones where everyone gets a happy ending, even if it takes a couple of weeks and some helicopter rides to get there.

Jones assembled a veterinary team to safely bring Gracie back to Cedar Hollow Ranch, where she'll hopefully enjoy her enclosure with renewed appreciation after her Texas-sized adventure.
