Mississippi Coach Gets City Key After Championship Season

The Lady Tornadoes basketball team got the hero's welcome they deserved Wednesday afternoon when Laurel, Mississippi turned out to celebrate their 5A state championship win.

Mayor Johnny Magee and city officials gathered fans at Pinehurst Park to honor the team's remarkable season. Every player walked away with individual trophies and framed certificates recognizing their achievement.

The team only lost two games all season, both to the same opponent. "They beat everybody else in the state except this one team, and next year, they'll have their number also," Mayor Magee said with a smile.

The police department gave a special presentation, and the school received a commemorative plaque for its trophy case. But the most emotional moment came when Mayor Magee presented Coach Sherri Cooley with a key to the city.

Cooley is retiring after this championship season, capping off six years at Laurel High School. The key symbolizes not just a winning season, but years of dedication to young athletes and her community.

"We're very excited to be recognized by the mayor, the City of Laurel and the police department," Cooley said. "What we do is always try to make our city proud of us. It feels good to be recognized for it also."
