Mississippi Freshman Leads Team to Dramatic Championship Win

When Mooreville baseball took the field for the championship game finale, their bats had gone cold at the worst possible time. The Mississippi team had scored just one run through five innings, a stark contrast to their 15-run explosion the day before.

But freshman Eli McDaniels never doubted his teammates would come through. "I never had a doubt," he said after the game.

His faith paid off in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Troopers rallied for three runs to defeat Poplarville 4-2 on May 20 at Trustmark Park, clinching the MHSAA 4A state championship and their 10th title in school history.

The victory came exactly one year after Mooreville lost in the 3A finals. This time, they did it after moving up a classification and losing five starters from the previous season.

McDaniels, the series MVP, went 4 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored across both games. Sophomore pitcher Carson Hicks threw a complete game with six strikeouts to seal the win.

"Baseball is not a one-man show," McDaniels said. "All these guys on the bench are stars. They were hot all game and all series."

The Troopers' journey from last year's championship heartbreak to this season's triumph shows what resilience looks like in action. Coach Derek Thompson praised the core group that returned and the new players who stepped into crucial roles.
