Mississippi Students Stop Bus After Driver Passes Out

A school bus rolled forward on a Mississippi road Wednesday as the driver slumped over the wheel, unconscious. But the students on board didn't panic—they became heroes.

Leah Taylor, a bus driver for Hancock County School District, suffered an asthma attack while driving middle schoolers home from school. Video from inside the bus shows a student in the front row noticing Taylor slouched over and grabbing the steering wheel as the bus continued moving.

Taylor briefly regained consciousness before collapsing a second time, falling backward in her seat. That's when the other students sprang into action.

One boy rushed to slam on the brakes while a girl administered the medication Taylor had been holding. Other students called for help as they worked together to keep everyone safe.

Five students stepped up in those critical moments: McKenzy Finch, Jackson Casnave, Darrius Clark, Kayleigh Clark, and Destiny Cornelius. The school honored them at a pep rally for their quick thinking and bravery.

Why This Inspires

These young people had never trained for an emergency like this. They simply saw someone who needed help and didn't hesitate.

Their instinct wasn't to freeze or panic but to move toward the problem and solve it together. One grabbed the wheel, another hit the brakes, another gave medication, and others called for help—a perfect example of teamwork under pressure.

Hancock Middle School Principal Melissa Saucier told local media she wasn't surprised by how the students handled the crisis. "This emergency situation could have definitely been detrimental and they handled it exactly how they should have," she said. "We're extremely proud of them."

Taylor has since recovered and told reporters the students "saved her life." She's grateful to be feeling better and thankful for the young heroes who kept their cool when it mattered most.

The heart-stopping video serves as a reminder that courage doesn't have an age requirement—sometimes it just takes recognizing when someone needs help and having the heart to give it.
