MLB Surprises 5 Cancer Patients With Field of Dreams Tickets

Guy Larson, Ray Owensby, Katie Koopman, Tom Foote, and Lucy Sutherland walked into their cancer center in Dubuque, Iowa on Thursday thinking they'd shake a few hands and take some photos.

Instead, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred showed up alongside Hall of Famers Joe Torre and Jim Thome, plus beloved mascots TC Bear and the Philly Phanatic. The patients and staff enjoyed what already felt like a special day.

Then came the real surprise. All five patients received tickets to that night's MLB at Field of Dreams game between the Phillies and Twins in nearby Dyersville.

"I had no idea that it was going to be this intense," said Owensby, a lifelong Reds fan. "I'm blessed to be a part of it."

The visit was part of MLB's tradition of giving back to communities hosting their signature events. Manfred and the group toured the MercyOne Dubuque Cancer Center, meeting with doctors and staff who care for patients facing one of life's toughest battles.

"We like to do something in the community to leave a little mark behind, say thank you," Manfred explained. The gesture acknowledged both the region's investment in the ballpark and the people who make Iowa special.

The Ripple Effect

For Torre, a cancer survivor himself, the visit carried extra meaning. He spent time talking one-on-one with patients who understood the fight he'd been through.

"It's like Christmas," Torre said about bringing the game to local fans. "You bring something, unwrap it, and here it is."

The Field of Dreams game itself represents baseball at its most magical, played on the iconic Iowa field from the 1989 film. This year's matchup featured two playoff-contending teams battling under the lights, streamed live on Netflix.

But for five cancer patients from Dubuque, the real win happened hours before first pitch. Baseball gave them exactly what Manfred hoped for: a lift, at least for a day, during an incredibly difficult journey.

Sometimes the best surprises come when you least expect them.
