Mom Beats Stage 4 Cancer, Celebrates Twins' First Birthday

The doctors and nurses who helped bring twins Kim Min-jeong and Kim Min-seo into the world gathered for a special celebration this month. They watched the one-year-olds enjoy their first birthday party at the very fertility clinic where their journey began.

Jeong Ji-young was just 21 when doctors diagnosed her with Stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2016. She endured extensive surgery and chemotherapy that took her right ovary but spared her left one and uterus, keeping her dreams of motherhood alive.

Nine years later, Jeong walked into Daegu CHA Fertility Center in South Korea seeking help. After two rounds of in vitro fertilization, she became pregnant with twins in 2024.

On January 20, the fertility center hosted a traditional "doljanchi" celebration for the healthy boy and girl. Medical staff who had guided Jeong through her fertility journey joined the family for the milestone.

"After recovering from ovarian cancer and overcoming subfertility, it is more meaningful not only to achieve pregnancy, but to see the babies born and to share this moment of their first birthday together," said Dr. Lee Kwang, who treated Jeong throughout her pregnancy journey.
