Mom Graduates After Tragic Loss Took Husband and 2 Kids

Elena Alicea walked across the stage at Grand Canyon University wearing a pendant with photos of her parents around her neck, carrying memories of loved ones who couldn't be there to see her triumph.

Just after enrolling in college in 2018, a fatal car accident took the lives of her husband, 5-year-old daughter, infant son, and nephew. The grief nearly ended her dreams of higher education.

"I questioned a lot why this happened," Alicea said. "But as a parent, I knew I couldn't just give up like that for the sake of my surviving child and in memory of my loved ones."

Before the tragedy, her oldest daughter had seen a graduation commercial on TV and made her mom a promise. "When you graduate, we will be there holding a sign, saying we are proud of you, mom," she told her.

Those words became Alicea's lifeline. Growing up in foster care herself, she'd always wanted to help children and families navigate difficult home situations. Her employer, Head Start in Seattle, encouraged her to pursue a degree to expand her impact.

After meeting a GCU representative at a 2020 work conference, she decided to finish what she started. Alicea enrolled in the behavioral health science program while working as a middle school paraeducator, balancing work, school, and caring for her surviving daughter.

"There were many moments along the way where I felt like I was failing and didn't think I would actually make it to this point," she said. "My daughter's words became a source of motivation during my most difficult moments."

Now she's equipped to help other children facing broken families and tough home situations, turning her pain into purpose.

On Wednesday morning, Alicea walked across the stage with her current husband Tomas and daughter Zoie watching, confetti raining down as she accepted her bachelor's degree. The moment was both joyful and emotional, honoring those who believed in her dream.

Now she's ready to become the family advocate and social worker she's always wanted to be, carrying forward the support her family gave her.
