Mom Learns Drums, Rocks Daughter's Wedding With Weezer Hit

Some moms throw the perfect bridal shower. Elly Sommer learned an entire instrument to rock out at her daughter's wedding.

In February, Juin Sommer posted an Instagram video showing how his mom spent months mastering the drums to perform Weezer's 1994 classic "Say It Ain't So" at his sister Hanna's wedding. The clip contrasts her nervous first practice sessions with the final performance where she absolutely crushes it behind the kit.

The wedding performance was a full family affair. Juin sang lead and played guitar, bride Hanna shredded rhythm guitar in her wedding dress, longtime friend RJ handled bass, and mom Elly held down the beat. She nailed every detail, from the syncopated kicks to the pre-chorus snare rolls.

It all started when Juin jokingly captioned his mom's first practice video "My mom learning the drums for her midlife crisis" back in November 2023. Elly had already been taking lessons, but she ramped up her practice time specifically for the wedding surprise.

The song choice carried special meaning for the family. Juin, Hanna, and RJ used to play together in a high school band, covering "Say It Ain't So" dozens of times. "I think I covered that song at least 50 times over the years with different bands," Juin told Upworthy.

Sunny's Take

After the video went viral, Weezer themselves chimed in on Instagram. "Nothing says happily ever after quite like some =w= at your wedding," the band wrote. "Congrats to mom on nailing the drums and congrats to the happy couple!"

Both Juin and Hanna freaked out with joy at the recognition from one of their favorite bands. Fans flooded the comments with praise, calling Elly "the coolest mom ever" and declaring it "epic on so many levels."

One wedding videographer commented that after filming 170 weddings, this performance would have made them lose their mind. Another viewer joked about wanting to become "the Korean mom playing at her kid's wedding with sunglasses on like an absolute legend."

Juin admits his mom was nervous despite all her practice since it was her first time performing in front of a crowd. But watching the video, you'd never know it.

The bar for cool moms, wedding entertainment, and family bands just got raised significantly.
