Mona Lisa Gets Own Building in $1B Louvre Redesign

The world's most visited museum just solved one of its biggest headaches with a design that makes everyone happier.

The Louvre announced a $1 billion renovation that will give the Mona Lisa her own dedicated building. The 33,000-square-foot space means the 20,000 daily visitors who come solely to see da Vinci's masterpiece can get in, snap their photos, and leave without entering the main museum.

For everyone else, this changes everything. Visitors who want to explore the Louvre's hundreds of thousands of other artworks will no longer spend precious time stuck in lines behind tourists queuing only for the Mona Lisa.

"Every day, this very room is the scene of intense agitation," said Laurence des Cars, the museum's former director. She wasn't exaggerating. Visitors regularly report feeling claustrophobic in the crush of bodies pushing to glimpse the surprisingly small portrait.

New York's Selldorf Architects won the design contract from a pool of 100 firms. Their plan focuses on expanding the Grande Colonnade, the museum's stunning 17th-century eastern facade, with two new underground entrances that will spread out foot traffic.

The redesign includes separate dining areas and gift shops, plus expanded gallery space throughout. Outside, new pathways and greenery will better connect the museum with Paris itself.

The Ripple Effect

This renovation will accommodate an estimated three million more visitors per year while making the experience less stressful for everyone. Museum staff who've managed daily crowd control will finally have breathing room. Tour guides can focus on sharing the Louvre's incredible collection instead of navigating human traffic jams.

The separate Mona Lisa space also protects the painting itself from the wear and tear of constant crowding. Future generations will get to see her just as clearly as visitors do today.
