Montana Fouts Pitches USA to Gold, Eyes 2028 Olympics

Montana Fouts made history Monday night in Oklahoma City, throwing a one-hit shutout as Team USA defeated Japan 2-0 to win the International Cup gold medal. The performance announced to the world what softball insiders already knew: she's the best pitcher on the planet.

Fouts retired the first 18 batters she faced, carrying a perfect game into the seventh inning. Only a leadoff single in the final frame prevented perfection, but the Kentucky native finished with eight strikeouts and complete dominance over the world's top-ranked team.

"She had her rhythm, she was very focused, nothing got her rattled," said Team USA coach Patty Gasso. The backward strikeout that ended the game sent Fouts ripping off her mask and pounding her chest in celebration.

"I've had my heart broken here before, I've had really awesome moments in this park," Fouts reflected. "Just to have another opportunity to wear USA across my chest, I'm not gonna let how I feel about performances dictate what I give to my teammates."

Team USA treated the International Cup as a dress rehearsal for 2028, when Olympic softball returns to Oklahoma City. While coach Gasso still must finalize her roster, the ace position looks settled.
