Morocco Adds 1+ GW of Solar Power in 2025

🤯 Mind Blown

Morocco installed over 1,200 MW of solar capacity last year, including a massive surge in rooftop and agricultural systems. The North African nation is racing toward its goal of getting half its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Morocco just had its biggest solar year ever, installing more than 1,200 MW of clean energy capacity across the country. While utility-scale projects added 204 MW, the real surprise came from homes, farms, and businesses that installed over 1,000 MW of rooftop and distributed solar systems.

The boom in smaller installations caught even experts off guard. Solar-powered irrigation systems for farms made up 60% of distributed installations, helping farmers reduce costs while growing food more sustainably.

Morocco's largest solar project to date started generating power last year too. The 105 MW Oulad Farès facility in north-central Morocco is part of a three-project portfolio that will eventually produce enough electricity for tens of thousands of homes.

The country now has 1,285 MW of utility-scale solar plus an additional 534 MW of concentrated solar power. These numbers push Morocco closer to its ambitious 2030 target of generating 52% of its electricity from renewable sources.

The Ripple Effect

Morocco's solar surge is creating waves far beyond its borders. The government signed a deal in November to build a polysilicon production plant with capacity for 30,000 metric tons annually, potentially making Morocco a key player in the global solar supply chain.

Researchers estimate Morocco could eventually install up to 28.6 GW of distributed solar, creating a $31 billion market. That growth would create thousands of jobs while dramatically reducing the country's carbon emissions and energy costs.

The government launched the Solar Rooftop 500 program this year to keep momentum going. The initiative aims to install 500 MW of rooftop solar on commercial, industrial, and public buildings while reducing strain on the electrical grid.

Morocco already gets 45.5% of its installed electricity capacity from renewable sources. Hydropower leads the mix at 44.6%, followed by wind at 23.8% and solar at 16.9%.

Falling equipment costs made solar more affordable for Moroccan families and businesses last year. Most of the rooftop systems came from imported Chinese panels and inverters, with customs data tracking the surge in clean energy equipment.

Morocco's success shows how quickly a country can transform its energy system when policy, economics, and ambition align for a cleaner future.
