Morocco Helps Spain Seize 57,000 Kilos of Cocaine

A massive international drug operation just took down a criminal network that smuggled cocaine across continents, and Morocco played a starring role in making it happen.

Spanish authorities arrested around 100 suspects and seized 57,000 kilograms of cocaine in "Operation Sombra Negra," a coordinated effort that stretched from North Africa to Europe. Morocco's General Directorate of National Security worked alongside Spain's National Intelligence Center, Europol, and agencies from the UK, US, France, Cape Verde, and Colombia to dismantle the sprawling organization.

The criminal network operated across multiple countries, with hubs in Galicia, Portugal, Girona, Cadiz, Almeria, and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Government Delegate Pedro Fernandez praised the operation's scope, highlighting the sophisticated logistics and technology the criminals used to move drugs across borders.

This wasn't a lucky break. Morocco has become a crucial partner in fighting international drug trafficking, consistently sharing intelligence that leads to major busts.

Last October, Moroccan and Spanish teams arrested 20 suspects and found over 20 tons of cannabis hidden in green pepper shipments moving through the Port of Algeciras. The entire investigation started with a tip from Moroccan authorities who spotted suspicious refrigerated trucks.

Earlier this year, Moroccan intelligence helped Spanish police seize more than two tons of cannabis. In 2022, Morocco's security services even alerted Spain to a terror suspect planning an attack in Murcia, showing their cooperation goes beyond drug trafficking.
